Vocabulary List for "Money: "Dangers in shopping," pp. 9-10

ESL Reading. Vocabulary, pages 9-10 (“Money: Dangers in Shopping”)

Page 9:

avoid – to keep away from or abstain from (avoid buying = try not to buy)

pity – to feel sorry for; to have sympathy or compassion for someone who is suffering

unpleasant – not agreeable; disagreeable

results – effects, consequences of an action, a study, an investigation, etc.

frugal – economical, saving

earn – to merit, deserve, acquire by work or service

debt – something owed; an obligation

Page 10:

Paragraph 1:
effortless –
easy, not requiring work or effort

Paragraph 2:
hobby
– an activity you do in your spare time because you enjoy it

Paragraph 3:

convenient – nearby, easy to access; suitable to your schedule, your comfort, etc.

addictive – having characteristics that can lead to habitual action or use, or can cause addiction (tobacco is addictive!)

self-defeating – done in a way that keeps you from succeeding

behavior – way of acting or doing things

Paragraph 4:
compulsive
– not able to resist doing a certain thing; doing it because you are drawn to it, not because you need to do it

purchases – things that you have bought (verb: to purchase = to buy)

Paragraph 5:
deny
– say something is not true

aware – conscious; having knowledge of something that is not obvious

fully – completely

Paragraph 6:

urge – a strong desire or need
